BSC Plaza has held an immersive live-fire firefighting drill. Organised by BSC Group, the drill involved tenant staff, property operations staff and group headquarters staff, and used real smoke and real fire to strengthen fire safety awareness and emergency response skills across the complex and to reinforce the safe operation of the shopping centre.
The drill was modelled on a real fire in a commercial complex, simulating a fire among combustible materials in one area of the plaza and the spread of dense smoke. Once the alarm sounded, the project activated its fire emergency plan, on-site fire station personnel responded immediately, and evacuation, power isolation to the affected area and activation of smoke extraction and emergency lighting were carried out in parallel. There was no rehearsal: everyone responded as they would to a real incident, reproducing the full sequence of a fire response and putting the project's emergency system to a genuine test.
Unlike conventional classroom training, the drill focused on hands-on practice, with two core modules: escaping through smoke and extinguishing a live fire. In a simulated low-visibility, smoke-filled environment, participants practised crouching low, covering their mouths and noses and evacuating in the right direction. In the live-fire module, everyone in turn completed the full standard sequence of extinguishing a fire with a dry powder extinguisher, connecting a fire hose and operating the nozzle, building solid skills in tackling a fire in its early stages and working together.
A fire safety education session was held alongside the drill, covering the most common risk points in a commercial complex, including electrical hazards, storage of flammable materials and keeping fire escape routes clear, with typical case studies to reinforce the habit of daily self-inspection.
As a busy, mixed-use urban shopping complex, BSC Plaza treats fire safety as a core priority in its operations. The project refuses to run drills for show, and instead uses immersive, realistic training to build genuine emergency skills, protect the lives and property of tenants, shoppers and staff, and fulfil its responsibility for safe operations.
BSC Group will next establish a long-term programme of practical fire drills, with regular safety training and hazard inspections, embedding fire safety management into daily operations, continually improving the complex's ability to prevent and respond to fire, and providing a safe, stable and reassuring environment for business and shopping.
